Calayan Rail Project receives Follow-up Award from BPCP
February 2007

The Calayan Rail Project has been granted a Follow-up Award of $25,000 by the BP Conservation Programme (BPCP). Phase 2 of this project has an over-all goal of strengthening the capacity of local stakeholders to conserve the Calayan Rail and Calayan's biodiversity. The project will run from March 2007 until April 2008 and includes a pride campaign, teacher-training activity, law enforcement training, reforestation training, rail monitoring training and participatory resource mapping to help establish a local wildlife sanctuary. The core project team is composed of Carl Oliveros (team leader), Elson Aca, Yen Javier, Harvey Garcia, Cynthia Layusa and Miguel Ferido. JC Gonzalez and Arne Jensen act as academic advisers.

The first phase of the Calayan Rail Project received a Silver Award from BPCP in 2005 and a Haribon Threatened Species Program Small Grant in the same year. During this phase an extensive survey of the Calayan Rail was conducted, after which educational as well as outreach activities were undertaken.
