Calayan youth participate in environmental education seminar
January 2007

Officers and members of the Calayan Youth Association (CYA) attended a seminar organized by Isla Biodiversity Conservation on 20 January 2007 at the Calayan Multi-Purpose Hall. A total of 23 youths were present in the half-day seminar that included topics such as the importance of sustainable use of resources and the importance of biodiversity.

The activity is part of Isla's continuing efforts to raise environmental awareness among residents on Calayan Island.

"The seminar was good. I hope Calayan's youth will always attend seminars like this," said Lito Ubasa, a 29-year-old participant from Brgy. Magsidel.

Gerald Genova, a third-year high school student said "I learned a lot, especially about renewable and non-renewable natural resources."

"We hope that CYA will play a key role in raising environmental awareness in their community," according to Isla president Carl Oliveros, who facilitated the seminar with volunteers Michael Angelo Morales and Domingo Sibbaluca Jr.

CYA president Eric Nuņez and secretary Virgie Bumagat are planning to hold environmental education seminars for their 150 members in the coming months.
