Wildlife sanctuary proposed at the Calayan Sangguniang Bayan August 2006 Sangguniang Bayan (SB) member Teresita Singun has formally proposed the establishment of a wildlife sanctuary in Longog, Calayan. Some members of the council, including Environment Committee Chair Winifredo Agarpao expressed support for the idea of creating a sanctuary but expressed concern over the lack of details in the current proposal. He cited, for example, the absence of exact boundaries in the resolution submitted. He added that the SB needs to know the land classification and status of land tenure in the proposed sanctuary and the acceptability of the measure to current land occupants. ISLA is currently proposing to assist Councilor Teresita Singun in mapping the proposed sanctuary and conducting community consultations through its upcoming Calayan Rail Project II. |
