Biodiversity Surveys

The Babuyan Islands harbor bird and reptile species that are known to occur only in the island group. These species include the Calayan Rail Gallirallus calayanensis, the Camiguin Wolf Snake Lycodon bibonius, Jareck's Wolf Snake Lycodon chrysoprateros and Mcgregor's Flap-legged Gecko Luperosaurus mcgregori. This supports the idea that that these islands may constitute a separate, fully unique center of Philippine endemism. In collaboration with the University of Kansas Natural History Museum and Biodiversity Research Center we are carrying out surveys of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians in order to better understand the biogeography and biodiversity of this little-known island group.
